Using Codex with lite.computer

Q: Where does the lite.computer instruction go for Codex?

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. It works in a folder on your Mac, editing files and running commands, so a status page or a project report is as natural a job for it as code.

On a Mac it runs as an open-source command-line tool, as an editor extension, and as the Codex mode of the ChatGPT desktop app. The standalone Codex app merged into the ChatGPT desktop app on July 9, 2026. The desktop app and the command-line tool share one settings file.

Set it up

In lite.computer, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar and open the Agent Helper. Copy the paragraph it gives you and paste it into ~/.codex/AGENTS.md. Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app keeps its personal instructions in the same file.
Give Codex the app's commands by running the line below once, in a terminal.
Keep lite.computer open on your Showspace. Start a new Codex session and ask Use the lite.computer tool to list every page in my Showspace. It lists the pages in your folder.

We use Codex with lite.computer ourselves.
For pages in your Showspace, use Codex in the terminal, your editor or the ChatGPT desktop app on your Mac.
Remote lets you control Codex on your Mac from the ChatGPT phone app. In the ChatGPT desktop app, go to Settings, then Connections, then Control this Mac or PC, and scan the QR code with your phone. Codex keeps working on your Mac, so pages land in your Showspace.
Codex reads AGENTS.md files from the top of a project down to the folder you are working in, so a project can add its own notes on top of your global file.
To refresh a page on a schedule, use Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app with a local project that includes your Showspace and ask it to schedule the refresh. Scheduled tasks are listed under Scheduled in the sidebar and run on your Mac while the app is open.
Codex creates images with its built-in image tool. Ask for a cover photo or illustrations in a report, and it builds them into the page, so they travel with the page wherever it goes.

Does Codex work with lite.computer?

Yes. Codex running on your Mac saves HTML pages into your Showspace, and lite.computer shows each one as it lands. One line in a terminal lets it open pages and arrange windows in the app as well.

What happened to the Codex app?

On July 9, 2026 OpenAI merged the Codex app into the new ChatGPT desktop app, where Codex is a mode beside Chat and Work. It shares settings with the Codex command-line tool, so the setup above covers both. See also ChatGPT.
